Social connectedness

Social connectedness is the measure of how people come together and interact. At an individual level, social connectedness involves the quality and number of connections one has with other people in a social circle of family, friends, and acquaintances. Going beyond these individual-level concepts, it involves relationships with beyond one's social circles and even to other communities. This connectedness, one of several components of community cohesion, provides benefits to both individuals and society. Population based surveys sometimes use qualitative questions to help understand the level of social connectedness in communities.

"So what is the decisive moment? To put it simply it is the moment, the perfect moment. A single moment in time that is happening right before your eyes, that may last for only a fraction of a second, in which all the elements of the perfect photograph are combined. A beautiful balance of elements that may include the light, subject matter, colour, tones, contrast, lines, movement, expression, and the proper composition, all in a perfect moment of harmony.

It is usually a fleeting moment that has passed you by, even before had a chance to think about photographing it. In fact it is not something you think about at all, it is something you see and feel within a moment, and are hopefully photographing it as it happens. If you are thinking about it, then you have already missed the decisive moment.

Is the decisive moment only for the unpredictability of real life street photography?  Absolutely not, the decisive moment transcends that notion and can be found in many fields of photography. You can have a decisive moment while shooting a portrait, a fashion picture, reportage, or in sports photography, because of the emotion, movement, and the unpredictability of people. I do think that people being in the photograph is a very important element to a photograph having the quality or feeling of a decisive moment, but it is not a absolute requirement."

What the Race to the South Pole Can Teach You About How to Achieve Your Goals

"In 1910, two explorers began their quests to become the first men to ever set foot upon the southernmost point on earth.

It was the “Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration,” and the South Pole represented one of the last unexplored areas on earth. Robert Falcon Scott hoped to claim the bottom of the world for England; Roald Amundsen wished to plant the Norwegian flag there on behalf of his countrymen.

Despite their common goal, the two adventurers’ approaches to their expeditions were quite different—as were the end results. Amundsen reached the South Pole first and returned home on a trip that was relatively smooth and straightforward. Scott arrived at 90 Degrees South only to experience the crushing disappointment of seeing one of Amundsen’s flags flapping in the wind. He would never make it back; he and his four companions died of starvation, exhaustion, and exposure as they attempted to make the 700 mile return trip to their base camp.

The outcome of any endeavor is decided by the weights of a scale–on one side lies fate/risk/circumstance and on the other, preparations/tactics/heart. The adventurer cannot know exactly how much will be loaded on the luck side of the scale when he sets out, but he can overload the other side as much as possible, in hopes of tipping the chances in his favor. This is what Amundsen did, and how he did it reveals a number of strikingly clear insights into how we too can reach our goals."
